The Shadow

Initially, the shadow is everything the ego consciousness does not know about itself, the entire unconscious part of the personality. In other words, what we are but we ignore. Despite the ignorance of consciousness, it still forms part of our being as part of the ego; the shadow represents “a narrow gate whose painful constriction spares no one who descends into the deep well.”

He kissed his forehead, a brief gesture, almost chaste, yet it sealed something much deeper. Dieter closed his eyes. And although horror still pulsed beneath his skin, he did not think about running away. He thought, with terrifying clarity, that for the first time in a long while he was not alone. And that was enough.
